Aycliffe Schools Gala It was pleasing on the 60th anniversary of the town that we had our most successful gala to date. There were ten schools competing and over 150 children took part. Medals were presented to every competitor and a commemorative plaque was awarded to each school. There were sixteen young volunteers from local colleges who contributed greatly to the smooth running of the gala. There was only four points between the top three teams with two events to go the excitement was unbelievable. Terrific support from a capacity crowd added to a memorable evening for every one involved. A bouquet of flowers was presented to Andrea Bean as a token of appreciation for all the work done in teaching the children to swim over the past year and her help in the preparation of the teams. The trophy for the top large school was awarded to Byerley Park and trophy for the top small school went to Heighington. Guests of honour were Lee Dalzell, Swimming Development Officer for Durham County Council and Clare Harding, Senior Competition Manager, SSCO. The purpose of their visit was to make the presentations and to look at the event with a view to rolling this type of competition out across the county. The principle of involving clubs with both schools and council is regarded as a significant step in the right direction. Appreciation of the support given by Sedgefield Borough Council and Durham Sport was expressed along with help from all the schools Schools competing were St Josephs, Aycliffe Village, Heighington, St Marys, St Francis, Byerley Park, Vane Road, Sugar Hill, Woodham Burn, & Stephenson Way.
